“Cash is handled daily by all classes of people and may have contaminated by various kinds of bacteria. The coronavirus can survive on surfaces so people need to be more careful after holding cash. Please wash your hands properly every time after you handle cash”, said U Zaw Lin Htut, an executive from Myanmar Payment Union.
He said now is the time to push for cashless payment systems in Myanmar. "However, it is not easy for the whole country to transition to a digital trading system overnight. We need to start by raising public awareness about the many benefits of using a digital trading system."
U Nyo Myint, chair of KBZ MS said: “Even in China where only digital payments are used, the spread of virus was enormously high. In Myanmar, we still need to make payment by cash even though we order goods online, so the risk is higher. We need to be careful not to get sick from handling contaminated cash to prevent the virus from spreading as much as possible."
